Standards and Requirements for Custom Machining Services
Industries constantly evolve, driven by a growing demand for scientific and technological advancement. Successful experimentation must ensure material integrity, safety, performance, and compliance with strict environmental and operational regulations.
These standards typically focus on aspects like purity, quality, and durability to guarantee that refractory metals meet the demanding conditions of high-stakes research applications. Because they serve multiple industries and extreme environments, this list includes more than average standards and requirements.
Key Standards and Requirements:
- ASTM International (fka American Society for Testing and Materials): Standards for materials used in energy applications.
- SAE Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS, formerly known as the Society of Automotive Engineers or SAE)
- ASME BPVC (Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code): Guidelines for materials used in pressure vessels and reactors.
- Department of Defense (DoD) Military Standards or Military Specifications (MIL) on the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) ASSIST Database
We adhere to quality compliance certification standards and statutory regulations that pertain to our exotic materials, processes, custom machining services, traceability, and other aspects of our in-house expertise. Our materials specialists provide expert counsel on metal selection and inspection to ensure you receive materials that meet or exceed your expectations.
Leading Edge Metals & Alloys Certifications include:
- ISO9001:2015 and AS9100D Registered
- ITAR Registered
- NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Compliant
Our deep understanding of this industry stems from our extensive experience, skilled metallurgy professionals, and a history of successful partnerships with leading national research labs.
Frequently Asked Questions About In-House Capabilities
Documentation may include Material Test Reports (MTRs), Certificates of Conformance, heat and lot traceability records, first article inspection reports (AS9102 when required), and customer-specific compliance documentation, depending on program and industry requirements.
Material traceability is maintained through heat and lot controls, certificates of compliance and origin, internal inspection procedures, and customer-specific documentation requirements. Serialization and laser marking are available when required for regulated or mission-critical applications.
Material integrity is maintained through controlled machining practices, inspection checkpoints, traceability documentation, and close coordination between materials specialists and machining teams. This is especially critical for brittle or high-temperature refractory metals.
To initiate a machining or processing quote, customers should provide material specification, drawings or dimensions, tolerances, surface finish requirements, inspection needs, and delivery timing. Early clarity helps ensure accurate pricing and alignment with manufacturability.
Yes. LEMA supports prototypes, small-batch production, and ongoing production programs. Capabilities are scaled based on tolerance requirements, volume, material complexity, and delivery timelines.
LEMA supports additional services such as grinding, heat treating, forging, rolling, extruding, stamping, plating, and non-destructive testing (including ultrasonic testing and FPI) through its subcontractors and partners that are on the Prime Customer “Approved Supplier List” and/or are National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCP) registered, . These services are coordinated to maintain material integrity and compliance.
Yes. LEMA provides laser engraving and permanent marking using the Beamer Laser Marking System B Series. This supports serialization, traceability, 2D codes, part identification, and compliance marking for regulated applications.
LEMA offers full inspection services, including CMM inspection using Zeiss Contura systems, Keyence IM and XM platforms, and first article inspection reports compliant with AS9102 when required. Inspection methods are aligned with customer drawings and industry standards.
Yes. LEMA supplies materials in raw, semi-finished, near-net, or fully machined form, depending on customer requirements. This allows customers to reduce internal machining time, control tolerances earlier, and streamline downstream manufacturing.
Leading Edge Metals & Alloys provides in-house cutting and machining services for exotic and refractory metals, including waterjet cutting, horizontal saw cutting, shearing, and CNC machining using multiple mills and lathes. These capabilities support precision processing of difficult-to-machine materials.
Yes. Many exotic and refractory metals can be machined, cut, or fabricated into semi-finished or finished components. However, machinability varies significantly by material. Factors such as brittleness, thermal conductivity, and work hardening must be considered during part design and processing to avoid excessive tool wear or dimensional instability.
